Mid-Year Observations

So here we are into August 2011 and 8 months deep into what just yesterday was a new year. Now we are well on our way to another holiday season and anticipated industry events like CES and MacWorld 2012 still ahead of us. What is clear at this point is that things have dramatically changed over the past year.

Social Media has dominated the headlines and even movie screens. Tablets and Smartphones capture most of the press attention and sales. Acquisitions and mergers seem to be on the rise in what is a consolidation frenzy. Broadband providers are preparing to squeeze every dollar out of users and are throttling down heavy users unwellng to pay more for data.

Apple has become the heavyweight in technology and innovation. Agile companies like HTC riding Apple’s coattails are reaping big profits but it looks like there will be a storm of litigation headed to the courts soon.

Many previously successful big-time companies has seen drastic reversals of fortune and must reposition themselves and get innovative if they really plan to endure and thrive into the future. This will mean mastering trends, new product spaces and changes in user interests and choices.

Decision 2011: To Litigate or Innovate?

Scales of Justice

Scales of Justice

As I was busy perusing the headlines this morning one thing stood boldly out. It seems evertbody is suing or is about to sue everybody else. In this Bizarro world senario innovation is giving way to litigation. Apple is suing Amazon over use of the AppStore name; Microsoft is suing Barnes and Noble over Android e-readers; Small carriers are considering blocking the AT&T/T-Mobile deal. Those are just a start. I think I will soon post a page that attempts to keep track of the latest forays into the courts and through the vaulted “Halls of Justice”.

4/1 Addendum: Even though it’s April’s Fool day, this is no joke:

MICROSOFT IS FILING AN ANTITRUST COMPLAINT AGAINST GOOGLE WITH THE EU.

Alleging anticompetitive behavior.

4/19/11 Addendum: Apple Suing Samsung over Galaxy Smartphones and tablets!

So, you have a Great Idea!

Go To Web

Go To Web

Its one thing to want to start something new online. But be advised thats more than a notion. If you are naive and innocent rushing wildly into the fire is fine, but if you truly believe you have an incredible idea for a new social site or service and you or your friends have the skills and talent to pull it off, before you pour your precious time and hard-earned money into building it and then hoping they’ll come, DO this: go out to Go2Web20.net and take a look at the great number of sites and services out there that you have never heard of. Please, don’t let this discourage you but let it simply be a reality check to help you decide if you have the passion, drive and fortitude to see it through, and are absolutely serious. I wish you all the best success.

YikeBike

yikebike

What the Segue did for walking the yikebike is ready to do for biking or as a commuting appliance. The Yikebike is a miniature mobile electronic bike of sorts made of carbon fiber on sale now, its weighs 10.8 kilograms and folds so small enough to fit in a backpack, it can go15 mph. Its problem is range one – its limited range of just 10 kilometers. Now there is an extender battery pack that provides an additional 10 kilometer. Each battery costs US$195 and weighs 1.95kg and there’s a special backpack to carry multiple batteries so it becomes a fairly practical option. It prices in around $3600.

It has a bit of a learning curve, but once mastered Yikebike provides quick transport and convienience. In the coming moths it will be interesting to see how these devices do. They are revolutionary devices that have won or placed well in every major design award for which it has competed. This includes winning the cover of Time Magazine’s Invention of the Year issue in 2009.

As a transport alternative Yikebike  makes a whole lot of sense, and now that it is actually on sale, it will be very interesting to see how it fares in the realworld marketplace. Bon Voyage!
