OQO Model 3 UMPC
Recently a frequent reader commenting on my look at the latest iPod Touch asked “what happened to the OQO and rest of the UMPC movement of 2006-2009 in the light of the success of the iPad and Android”. As I am based in San Francisco this was a very interesting question requiring research, investigation and a little further inquiry.
First I went to OQO’s site: www.oqo.cc (in Chinese) and discovered that even though the company bowed out of the race in 2009 surprisingly they are still around and have just launched a new model, “the OQO Model03″ (an upgrade version of the OQO 2+), but again one must be willing and able to pay premium prices.
The new Model 03 is an Atom-driven device featuring a 1.2GHz Z515, 1.6GHz Z530, 1.86GHz Z540, or 2.0GHz Z550. Other changes include Windows 7, “WCDMA \ EVDO \ TD-SCDMA and 3G network support”, Model03 also sports a multi-touch screen.
More on Model03 after I get to visit and/or interview folks at the company.
