iPad Mini Mania

I must admit I was one of the millions calling for release of the iPad Mini if there really was one. Well it was real and Apple finally “released the Kracken” and there are mixed emotions all around. Most are focused on the price which is not very competitive with other similar devices such as the just released Samsung Galaxy Note II, but Apple has never ever worried about price as a roadblock.

First Impressions:

Right off top, the iPad Mini is a beautiful looking device. It fits in the palm of a wide-open hand quite well and design-wise it is true Apple.

I held off getting an iPad beacause I really didn’t want to carry around another computer. The iPad Mini is a step up providing more real estate than an iPhone and offering an effective bridge between all of my business and social needs. It is a good trade off.

I also didn’t want to offer criminals another quick and obvious target for snatch and grab actions. Not that the Mini doesn’t, just it’s a little bit more stealthy and thus easier to conceal.

Lastly, I can actually do real work and research on it as opposed to struggling in the tight crimped confines of an iPhone.

The best part is that it has hit the market in perfect time for me to drop hints for it being my most desired holiday present. Even if I have to gift myself.

BTW. It is no mistake that there is a heavy Galaxy Note push this morning  in our emails and on TV. I will not be surprized when I open up my magazines and newspapers to see even more. We are in the midst of yet another bitterly fought battle frontleading up to the big 2012 Holiday drive. The contest is joined and there will definately be blood on the street before it is over.

Everything till now has only been a hum we are about to hear the whole song!

An Industry Unfolding

SOCIAL MEDIA ON THE RISE

It started with social media services and apps cathing fire. That evolved into consultants hyping “How to…” courses and white papers.  Then came universities offering tons of casual Social Media courses leading to certificates. Soon came big time Social Media conferences, seminars and expos Along the way came advanced subscription-based Social Media management tools organizing and analyzing everything. So here we are!

Well What’s Next in the unfolding of the Social Media ecosystem? There will be of cousre a shakeout causing a shedding the weaker offerings not able to catch fire. There will certainly be a buying frenzy where deep-pocket companies acquire smaller players with good ideas with the potential to capture sizable followings.

2012: So close we can almost smell it

Here we are just daysfrom popping the cork on 2012 and every technology pundit and their blogging monions are literally tripping over themselves attempting to predict and forecast whats in store in the world of technology for the coming year. Most of these immaginings involve the selfish hopes and desires of those that vainly presume that they know exactly what we, the consumers want and need. Usually a new disrupyive technology innovation explodes on the scene at least a month or two in that unexpectantly completely alters the anticipated direction of technology for the near future.

Companies like Apple and Google introduce their latest “game changer” and watch everybody else attempt to play catch up or just keep up.

Hopefully soon we will see the launches of the iPad 3, iPhone 5 and a whole slew of Android devices. These are expected. The mystery is the unexpected. Is there something ready to spring out of a skunkworks that will really shake things up and cause us to wonder why the heck we didn’t see it coming. We will adjust our careers to incorporate it into our expertise profile. Marketers will find new ways to make money offering its secrets and shortcuts.

Checkmate: Apple’s new Grand Central Store

Grand Central Station/Terminal

Grand Central Station/Terminal

The city is called “The Big Apple” so, it is appropriate that Apple has put down a huge footprint on America’s super city. Opening up a street side store is fine but opening a superstore inside the awsome Grand Central building is indeed a big deal. Now New Yorkers, visitors and commuters traveling through Grand Central in NYC can take a quick break away from their goings to stop and consider which Apple devices, if any, might fit their busy urban and business lifestyles.

Thousands of potential customers crowded into the mezzanine to experience the latest Apple store and get a hands-on personal feel for the latest iPhones, iPad, iPods and all things Mac. Over a million visitors are expected to shop at Apple’s new store before the end of 2012.

If this were a strategic or tactical move in the game of Monopoly it would be like a player buying up owning all of the best proprties and knowing they will eventually win the game.

A few New Yorkers site this as another ghastly assault on one of New York’s classic landmarks. Many others a bit more accomdating think that this is the future.

I am left wondering what other opportunities this opens up for Apple. I can easily see Apple hplding major events, conferences and product launches there.

Cool Camera: Red Scarlet

RED Scarlet 1

How do you top the geek that strolls in with that cool Nikon or Canon DSLR?

Try This cause It kinda seems like Christmas for photo and video enthusiasts. The reason being that on the same day that Canon unveiled the new Canon C300 cinema camera, Red has launched their new Scarlet camera which records in full 4k resolution.

SCARLET SPECS:

  1. 4096 × 2160 pixels resolution for video,
  2. 5120 × 2700 for still images
  3. Max frame rate: 120 fps.
  4. Records in Redcode RAW format
  5. Shooting 1K at 120fps (tops Canon C300′s 1080p)
  6. 4k sensor.
More info to follow…

Canon EOS C300 Digital Cinema Camera

For a couple of years now cinema and video hounds both amateur and professional have been jumping up and down awaiting the debut of the RED camera technology. Many have held off major purchases of anything else, others got tired of waiting and reluctantly invested in lesser alternatives in order to get work done.

Canon has just launched its EOS C300 digital cinema camera and the RED’s long-awaited Scarlet. I do not remember that it was initially from Canon but it is now. The concept unit to the best of my memory were different but regardless here is what we have.

This latest event was a big deal! Canon dragged leading cinematographers on stage to co-sign and lend their approval of this breakthrough development.

Canon released its new camera on Hollywood’s Paramount lot.

Seen In attendance: Marty Scorsese and Ron Howard.

Though it records to the same video codec as previous Canon cameras (50Mbps 4:2:2 Canon XF) ‘video camera’ would be a misnomer. Digital cinema camera would be more appropriate with the S35-sized 4K sensor designed to appeal to budget film makers and episodic TV producers. Canon sees an opportunity to sell the equivalent of an Arri Alexa for a third of the price and compete with Sony’s CineAlta F3 large sensor offering. Of course, Canon has a bit of a psychological advantage in this regard.

Whilst a number of ‘Heath-Robinson’ arrangements were available for shooting film style on small sensor video cameras, it was the addition of a video mode to the Canon 5D MkII that really popularized the ’24 frames per second, shallow depth-of-field’ film style that’s all the rage these days. Of course, if you had some money and wanted to seriously go down the digital cinema route you bought a RED One – but that’s another story.

Specs:

Cinema standard PL lens mount form

Canon EF lens mount form

  • 4K-capable cinema-specific lenses -
  • 14.5 – 60mm T2.6 wide zoom in both mounts
  • 30 – 300mm T2.95-3.7 long zoom in both mounts
  1. EF-mount-only 24, 50 and 85mm cinema primes (work great on AP-C sized Canon still cameras)
  2. Camera’s sensor: a Super-35 sized CMOS of 3840 x 2160 pixels
  3. Quad HD rather than cinema 4K
  4. Only records 1080P at 24 – 30fps onto dual Compact Flash cards.
  5. No 4K output
  6. Superior color
  7. Superior low-light performance
  8. Shallow depth-of-field effects
  9. The picture can be saved with a Log Gamma (very flat, low contrast but high detail – suitable for post-processing) or with a
  10. Film-style look baked in
  11. Picture quality is very good.
  12. Nominal speed rating of the sensor is 800ASA with a potential 11 stops of latitude using Canon Log gamma.
  13. Slo-mo overcranking capabilities (60fps only available at 720P resolution)
  14. No automatic facilities on the camera only manual focus, manual exposure, manual white balance and manual level control on the two XLR mic inputs.

Its seems like the “razors and razor blades” sales approach. The camera comes as a kit, sans lens, but with a combined XLR audio input/LCD monitor unit, top handle, side grip, battery and charger.

Timeframe: Deliveries start at the end of January

Pricing: US$20,000 (GBP12,500 / EUR14,500).  Higher than the predicted $16,000, street price ?. comparisons to he Sony F3 are inevitable.

The Canon records with a higher data rate (50Mbps as opposed to 30) and though that may not be be significant, the buzz is that the Canon edges the Sony on picture quality. The Canon only possesses a single SDI output connector whilst the Sony has two, enabling high quality 4:4:4 signal to be recorded directly from the sensor block.

Sony charges you $4,400 (GBP2,700 / EUR3,100).

Canon’s advantage will be it’s lenses and there can be no concerns about the quality of the new cinema primes.

Canon hopes to impress Hollywierd by setting up a new service, support and research facility in the region. This is clearly the first step for Canon (a 4K SLR style shooter is in the works). Visit their new site for clips and more info.

Branding, if you didn’t already know it is all important.

We have already seen a growing number of faked Apple products, as well as fake Apple stores in China, and now Chinese footwear manufacturers are making faux Apple sneakers.

These fakey sneakers feature an Apple logo, and come in a range of different colors, and retail in China for around $5. They look like my old Converse All Stars, and shame on me, I want a pair!

Samsung SSDs coming for Laptops and Tablets

samsung PM 830

Samsung PM 830

From the very start of the tablet frenzy, I’ve had one major reservation that has kept me from dumping my trusty laptop and going the popular and trendy tablet route. Storage!. That drawback might just be history because New Samsung SSDs will soon be available to address the problem that most Tablets have, and could stand to resolve.

Samsung Semiconductor has just announced that they are now making their fastest solid-state drives for tablets and laptops with capacities of up to 512GB.

The PM830 SSD, for example, offers throughput of 6 gigabits per second, which effectively doubles the speed of older Samsung SSDs and will be available in capacities of 128GB and 256GB, No pricing or availability information is available as yet.

The Apple’s iPad 2 tablet supports up to 64GB capacity, so these  new drives could double storage capacity.

SSDs are still quite expensive, but prices seem to be falling and they will probably become a key storage option by next year.

SSDs are faster and consume less power than magnetic hard drives. They dramatically speed up boot times.

A few Other SSD providers in this marketplace are Intel, Toshiba, Super Talent, OWC, and OCZ.

A Stealth Computer?

When Apple came out with their Mac Mini, the concept of tiny computers was already out there. Since that time no one has really done anything serious to capitalize on the potential opportunities available. Fast forward to today. Finally someone has awakened to the possible. Ruggedized computer systems manufacturer Stealth Computer has announced The Little PC 670 a powerful small form factor PC. The Little PC 670 has been designed around Intel’s Core i3, i5 and i7 mobile processors, and sports numerous I/O connectivity options into their 6.54 x 6.18 x 1.89-inch (166 x 157 x 48 mm) durable aluminum chassis. HDD storage comes standard, but SSD solutions are available for applications that require extra-high shock, vibration and temperature protection. There is also support for full 1080p high definition playback, and 5.1 Channel audio from Realtek.

The standard LPC-670 model comes with Intel’s Core i5 520M processor running at 2.4GHz on a QM57 chipset, there are also Core i3, Core i5 580M (2.67Ghz) and Core i7 620M (2.67GHz) models available. Up to 8GB DDR3 memory can be installed over two slots, and 2.5-inch hard drive storage options can pack up to 750GB, with SSD options also offered. These systems are shipped with a slot-loading DVD-RW/CD-RW combo optical drive, with a Blu-ray burner option available.

Connectivity options are Gigabit LAN, an optional Wi-Fi 802.11g card and antenna, four USB 2.0 ports, RS232 COM port, DVI-I video connector, audio in and out, and a HDMI port.

There are chassis brackets available for rack mount installations,

The device is compatible with Microsoft Windows and Linux operating systems, with custom configurations possible. The LPC-670 is immediately available, with base models starting at$1,650.

Apple Stores Lookout: Here comes Microsoft!

microsoft-retail-store

microsoft store

Is there anything that Apple is doing that isn’t being copied? No, not even their stores.

A long time back high-flying Microsoft made a major decision not to do the brick-and-mortar retail store thing. Now nearly a decade later they are making a u-turn on that decision by planning to go street side deploying 75 new retail stores across the U.S. over the next 3 years.

In an announcement made at Microsoft’s 2011 Worldwide Partner Conference recently in L.A.. Microsoft explained that having stores provides the company with an insight in their consumers needs and requirements. The 75 new retail stores join Microsoft’s existing chain of 11 retail stores which have been built over the last two years.

Even with 75 stores appearing over the next 3 years Microsoft still has a long way to go to match Apple’s 320 International stores which have helped Apple grow their retail success, to $3.2 billion in retail sales in just the first quarter of 2011.

Microsoft used to rely on Retail chains, most now extinct to push P.C. wares. Apple, once left out, leapfrogged over all that at the right time, and in the right way and found enormous success on their own.

Time will tell how successful this move will be, but at first glance it seems a very good thing for consumers and a real “wake up call” for the few remaining computer retail chains that have failed to deliver the goods and capture the trust and loyalty of consumers or new markets.

APPLE STORES 2.0

Apple Store

Apple Store 2.0

In all the excitement surrounding iPads, iPhones and iTunes App Store advantages. It is easy to overlook the one aspect that competitors cannot easily duplicate: Company owned stores to match Apple’s stores. Now Apple is upgradinf their stores in ways that they hope buyers and users will welcome.
This makeover will involve the addition of new sections, installation of new iPad kiosks and updating their iOS Apple Store app with  new features. If you haven’t had a chance to check out the changes at your local Apple Store take a moment to drop in and see the new changes.
What is new and unique is the online integration the iOS Apple Store App. Apple updated their iTunes iPhone Apple Store application  with new features, including a tab that becomes available once you’re actually inside an Apple Retail Store. When you’re in a store, you can use your iPhone or iPad to request help for a product, you can see when the next workshops are scheduled, or view the available Genius Bar appointments.
While in the store you can request help using the application. After requesting help, your name is transmitted to an available associates’ iPod touch. When the associate is ready to meet with you, you will get a push notification from the Apple Store app with their picture, letting you know they will be at the front of the store to greet you.
Also new in the Apple Store app is the ability to custom configure and order a new Mac. This feature, which was previously unavailable, brings the iPhone app up to par with the Apple Store website.
The new iPad kiosks is a new feature of the store upgrade. The iPads replace the previous acrylic and paper signage that let you know about available specifications and prices of the products. The app on the iPads allows you to request help from a specialist (just as you would on your iPhone using the Apple Store app), find out more information about the product, and see prices and specs.
Each product that Apple sells has an iPad kiosk beside it, including the iPads. The kiosk lets you see which carriers the device is available on (Verizon or AT&T), and the features of each carrier as well. This is a nice touch, especially for customers who have a difficult time deciding which carrier to go with.
Apple has always offered personalized setup of your newly purchased Mac in the store. This free-of-charge service gives new Mac owners the ability to bring in their old computer and have a Genius transfer over their data to the Mac. Apple now has dedicated a section of the store to personalized setup.

My Apple store is in downtown San Francisco. These welcomed changes will allow me to get some additional shopping done in stores near the Apple store without rushing or making me miss my Genius Bar Appointment.

Technology Trend Timeline:

Timeline

Clink the image

I went online to find a Technology Trend Timeline and couldn’t so I created one  in my spare time hoping I could use it to visualize any patterns That turned out to be exactly what happened. Much like looking into a cup of  tea leaves in order to divine the future looking at the timeline revealed the peaks and valleys, ebb and flow of innovation. I never liked divination of any kind so Interpretation of this timeline, if any is possible, is strickly up to the vision, insight and interpretation of the viewer.

Wouldn’t it be amazingly ironic if The next big trend turns out to be spotting trends. One can, would and should use WeBots, or whatever but this could actually be the optimum career path for the overly curious. It is hard work. There are Trends within trends, and trends that give way into other trends and trends that lie hidden beneath the surface of other things.

At quick glance on the approaching horizon I see possibilities of Dot Com Bubble 2.0 as companies look to cash in on their Social Media advantages like LinkedIn just accomplished.

Some are saying and truly believe that Chromebooks are an emerging technology trend about to explode upon the scene in the near future.

What is visibly clear is that there are phases of condensed innovation usually led off by an innovation that awakens the competitors and imitators. This pattern has often been repeated and could be considered a template. Some companies are risk adverse and will only step out when others have plowed the ground and prepared a way.

As this is just the first draft of this timeline please check back here for follow up versions with additional trends included on the timeline. Also, If you notice obvious errors or serious omissions please contact me, your help is greatly appreciated.

COOL VIDEO EDITING: Final Cut Pro X

I have close friends and family that are serious video professionals. I have watched them struggle through versions of Final Cut Pro since Apple first rolled it out years ago. Initially I wasquite impressed but after several fumbled mission critical projects the bloom was suddenly off the rose. Now, Apple has taken the wraps off their upcoming update to Final Cut Pro now called Final Cut Pro X, this non-linear editing solution has been completely rebuilt from the ground up to support Snow Leopard’s Cocoa technology, and utilizes the full potential of modern 64-bit multicore systems with powerful GPUs. There’s many new features and some major changes to the UI and process.

In addition theres an interesting new pricing model. Now Final Cut Pro X will come in at $299, and you can only get it from the Mac App Store, meaning there’s no upgrade price – everyone pays the same price. This is a deal because competing video software solutions such as Vegas Pro 10 costs $600, Premiere Pro CS5 = $799, and Avid Media Composer 5 will run you a stunning $2,495. Hello!

Since 07, neither Logic Pro nor Final Cut Pro have been available as standalone products, and were only available as part of Studio bundles which included applications that weren’t always very useful to users.

New Final Cut Pro X features include:

• Resolution-independent playback with support for 4K

• Non-destructive auditioning in the timeline

• Auto generation of metadata with shot and people detection

• Ability to add metadata to a specific range of a clip

• Background rendering

• Inline precision editing

• Ability to edit while footage is ingesting

• Auto image stabilization, color balance and audio cleanup

• Non-destructive color balancing

• Software driven entirely with key commands

Since 2007, neither Final Cut Pro or Logic Pro (Apple’s digital audio workstation software) have been available as a standalone products, only as part of a Studio bundle which includes applications that aren’t necessarily useful to everyone.

Nikon D5100 DSLR Camera

Nikon D5100+mic

Nikon D5100+mic

I have a friend that is a professional photographer and swears by Nikon while my other friend also a photog is a Canon guy. They squabble frequently about gear but both do great work. Thanks to Geeky-Gadgets.com has made me aware that I don’t have to go upscale because Nikon has added a new entry level DSLR to their rather extensive line up. Now I can join the squabble and act like I know what I’m talking about. The latest camera from the big N is the Nikon D5100 and Nikon has also announced a new microphone accessory for the D5100 namely an ME-1 DSLR, designed to filter out autofocus noise and wind noise. It is powered by the D5100 and attaches to the hot shoe on the camera. the camera features a 16.2 megapixel CMOS sensor , plus a vari-angle monitor and an EXPEED 2 imagine processing engine. D5100 DSLR features the same 23.3 x 15.6 CMOS sensor found on the Nikon D7000, and features an ISO range of 10-6400 expandable to 25,600. There is also a night vision mode, that can shoot photos in an ISO range up to 102,400.

iPhone Killer: HTC Thunderbolt

Apple’s got a real problem on its hands! Its called the HTC Thunderbolt.

I finally got my hands on an HTC Thunderbolt and the tenor of the positive feedback and stories are indeed true. It is a very good phone, If there really is an iPhone killer out there and that is not just a figment of an overzealous marketer’s imagination and hype, then the HTC Thunderbolt is about the closest I’ve seen from among all the hordes of pretenders and want-to-be’s to hit the market. HTC Thunderbolt’s are literally flying off the shelves of Verizon stores in numbers closely matching those of the iPhone 4.   Right off, the extra screen space impresses, but overall, the Thunderbolt’s functionality and full set of advanced smartphone features users are looking for in a new device doesn’t hurt. HTC has been in the business making good phones for quite a while now since they came out with the G1 and now they seem to have poured their experience, expertise and design talents into the new Thunderbolt and have a sure-fire hit on their hot hands. Recently, I get more web page hits for Thunderbolt info than for iPhone. Apple needs to listen for the footsteps coming up behind them and be on notice. It’s time for Cupertino to stand and deliver on a newly crafted next generation iPhone 5.

Thunderbolt chimes in with a nice hi-res 4.3″ screen, 8MP camera, LED flash, in-camera effects and a 720p HD camcorder, 4G uploads, Built-in DLNA connectivity to support your flatscreen. Thunderbolt functions as a mobile hotspot  turning your phone into a wireless router, providing Wi-Fi™ connections and 4G power to up to five devices. With a 1GHz Snapdragon Processor and Verizon’s 4G network users can expect robust performance.

LG G-Slate

LG G-Slate

Joining well over 200+ tablets out there in the wild or running around the rumor mill, LG is offering up a new tablet called the G-Slate on T-Mobile. This is the first 3D tablet officially running the very slick Android Honeycomb and sporting a Dual-core Tegra 2 chipset, 3D camera for video, a 8.9-inch display, and a forward-facing camera for video chats in addition there are a few interesting features. If rumor holds true, it comes in at or around $1,350 making it a bit too costly for much of the consumer market and much more expensive than the market dominant Apple iPad 2.

Lenovo Thinkpad W520

W520No other company has been handed a head start any more than Lenovo when they acquired IBM’s ThinkPad line of computers. The trick for Lenovo was to stay competitive and aggressive in a rapidly changing marketplace.

That has been a bit of a challenge of late but now Lenovo is steping forward to make a strong statement with the previously announced release of their new Thinkpad W520, a 15.6 inch quadcore notebook, with a 2.7GHz i7-2620 chip, 4GB RAM and NVIDIA 1000M Optimus graphics. Thinkpad W520 prices in at an affordable $1,649, well below Apple’s comparative MacBook Pro.
