Pebble Watch is Finally shipping!

They sending out the first batch to the very first backers now.

They state that “there are still some kinks and issues that they need to work out.”

Mass production has started at the factory. 800-1,000 Pebbles are coming out per day with There is a 5-7 day lag between a Pebble coming off the assembly line, and arriving in a fulfillment center for shipping

According to their Note…

  • Pebble iOS App is not yet available in the App Store.
  • Android app will go live on Google Play on Thursday Jan 24
  • We weren’t able to get as many units to our fulfillment centre as we expected (held up by documentation at the airport). Less than 500 units are going out today, with more expected to ship soon.
  • We accidentally more Address Confirmations emails than available Pebbles. So some people who received address confirmation emails will not get a tracking number for a few days until their Pebble ships out.

Proof of production

Finished product, all boxed up and ready to be placed in shipping cartons.

Production Notes:

  • As of today, the factory is manufacturing roughly 800-1,000 Pebbles per day. We’re working hard to get this up to our full capacity (2.4k per day)
  • We are shipping master cartons of Pebbles by air freight across the Pacific to our US distribution center 1-2 times per week, and 1-2 times per week to our Hong Kong distribution center which fulfills shipments to any country that isn’t the US. There is a 5-7 day lag between a Pebble coming off the assembly line, and it arriving in a fulfillment center for shipping.
  • Right now, we’re manufacturing in large batches of 1 colour at a time. Since black was by far the most popular colour, we started with a run of black Pebbles. I realize that this is different than what I said before…while we would have liked to be able to ship out all the colours at the exact same time, it’s proven to be impossible. We’re doing our best to match production of other colors as soon as possible.

They clearly also state that their job is  not finished, and have lots of improvements to make, and tens of thousands of Pebbles to ship out. They will continue biweekly updates, and as software updates with new features for Pebble every 2-3 weeks.

Huawei Ascend P1

I have been hearing alot about the Huawei Ascend P1 smartphone for months now and just recently began to wonder if there is anything about it worth looking into.

A Chinese derived phone is/was envitable considering China is where even Apple’s market-leading iPhones are manufactured and we all know hot innovations are always targets for imitation or advancement.

Google’s Android has made it simple for companies to enter the market and not have to build an OS platform or large developer base of apps.

Many of the quick reviews I have read about the Huawei have been relatively positive with a few criticisms. All in all it seems from a distance to be a very good first effort for a new player in the game.

I plan to work on obtaining a device to put to the test so I can report first hand.

Apple iPad Mini? Why the heck not?

Google’s recent announcement around Google’s new Nexus 7 Android tablet may have been the motivation forcing Apple to take their arms from behind their back  to respond to Google’s direct challenge. Now we have much greater faith that the rumored ‘iPad Mini’ a smaller version of Apple’s enormously popular iPad might indeed get made.

If an an iPad Mini comes our way just how might it stack up? Steve Jobs expressed his personal disinterest in a 7″ iPad, and ruled out speculation that Apple was working on one or would realease one. Apple’s new CEO Tim Cook in the wake of Mr. Jobs paasing now seems to have modified Apple’s stance saying that “things have changed”. That probably due to the appearance of the Nexus 7.

Google’s Nexus 7 has staked out a range of new vertical market opportunities as well launch an assault zeroing in on Apple’s weakest point, price. The Nexus 7 tablet is no shabby pretender it is a powerful little device priced at $199 for a quad-core 7-inch tablet with 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB of storage, and Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean). Reviewers claim it to be the best 7-inch tablet available.

An iPad Mini if it actually happens would go up against the Nexus 7, the second gen. Kindle Fire models, Samsung’s Galaxy Note and what we can supposed will be a whole host of many new tablets from major manufactuers like Microsoft, Dell, HP, LG, Lenovo and others.

The latest rumors suggest that the iPad Mini will have a touchscreen between 7 and 8 inches diagonally. Very little else is being revealed about the hardware front except that the iPad Mini would not feature the same Retina Display that differentiates the new iPad from everything else in the tablet marketplace.

Important questions also remain: Price; hardware configuration.

The battle ground is being marked out for a blood-in-the-streets battle between these two tech giants and their highly desired products.

Samsung Galaxy S III

Probably the most anticipated smartphone in years is the Samsung Galaxy S III. The Galaxy S III is Samsung’s flagship phone. This attractive quad-core spec heavy monster was recently launched just ahead of CTIA. From all indications Apple finally has a serious iPhone competitor to deal with. Samsung’s marketing and hype machine is gearing up to make sure that the S III becomes one of this year’s hot sellers. User anticipation and excitement is so high that hype may not even be necessary

SPECS:

  • Exynos quad-core LTE
  • or dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor
  • Android 4.4.4 ICS
  • 720p HD PenTile Display
  • Verizon carrier (LTE)
  • Wireless charging kit (coming late in 2012)

Notice: Specfications mentioned above are preliminary and may differ by country, carrier, or by design.

Is Samsung Galaxy S III, the iPhone killer?

This new smartphone looks like it may just the one to watch, especially  if Apple’s iPhone is not to your fancy. Competition is good, that will push the market leader to innovate to protect and inspire other would-be competitors to get on the stick if they want to play in this game.
At first glance the S III. Looks like an iPhone and that isn’t exactly where the simularities end.

The question that still needs to be answered by the marketplace, not pudits is whether it is the illusive “iPhone killer” everyone has been wishing, hoping and waiting for?

iPad 3 for The Post PC World!

Today March 7, 2012 Apple boldly declared that “we are now in the post PC World!”

That certainly does not mean we should rush right out and trash our once-loved desktop computers or that we should scrap as salvage our trusty laptop computers. It does mean however that mobility has won the day in the form of Smartphones and tablets/slates as the primary tools we should use to do what we do. Just as the era of full-blown applications must now give way to bite-sized apps to help us get things done.

Check out Apple’s new iPad introduction launch video.

More to come:

Thur. 3,8:

I decided I would back off and let all the [undits and hacks get their shots off first. Now that I have marinated on the Apple event and news I can now embark on an opinion.

It seems that Apple decided that “new is good. but that best is better”. They focused on improving the tablet experience in ways that users would notice and appreciate. The new iPad is faster (processor. connectivity), better looking (screen resolution), and more functional. They accomplish it without breaking the apps iOS relies on.

iPhone 5 Rumor Roundup:

Its that time of the year that the Android World will debut a slew of new phones and related services in an attempt to unseat Apple’s hold on the market.

Pundits will hype stats that state that Android has already won the battle. Others will crow about the features of phones that probably won’t make it to the marketplace  till December 2012, if ever.
The following is really just a short list that we absolutely are certain will expand in the next few months in light of new competitive products arriving on the scene real soon (at CES 2012).

iPhone 5 Rumor list:
  1. It will have a docking unit
  2. A bigger screen with twice the resolution of the iPhone 4
  3. It will come in at a lower price than previous iPhones
  4. 4″ screen despite Jobs’ admonition
  5. Casing will have flat edges rather than teardrop tapering
  6. Aluminium casing similar to iPod Touch
  7. Summer 2012 launch
  8. A thicker form factor
  9. Higher resolution HD screen
  10. LTE compatibility
  11. Increased screen size from 3.5” to 4”
  12. A docking accessory may be in the works
  13. Dynamic voice command enhancements to Siri
  14. Significant improvements and features to iOS 5 operating system
  15. Partnerships with Facebook and others
  16. Advanced integrated iCloud services
  17. iPhone Pricing reduced to compete with lower priced competitors

Warning:

None, or at least very few of these rumors have been confirmed and they are simply rumors and as such should be accepted with a huge grain of salt.

We just don’t know!

Apple hands HTC a minor setback

Cupertino scored victory over Taiwan’s HTC by winning a patent victory. Apple claims HTC’s phones illegally use patented features found in the iPhone. Depending on how this plays out in court HTC may face an import ban at could have been the worst possible time.

In what is seen as a limited legal victory for Apple, the U.S. International Trade Commission ruled that HTC violated only one of Apple’s, Calif.-based company’s patents. But that may enough to slow up the train but not derail it.

HTC responded quickly by agreeing to remove the feature in despite from all upcoming HTC phones soon. This means that ITC’s ruling will have very little practical effect.

ITC’s imposed import ban on only some of HTC’s products won’t take effect until April 19, 2012, giving HTC, Google, and partners a window of time to remove certain features or figure out technical work-arounds that don’t infringe on the patent.

Apple filed a complaint alleging that HTC violated 10 of its patents. In a preliminary ruling in June, an ITC administrative law judge found only two violations, and this latest ruling narrows the violation to only one of the original 10 patents.

Industry watchers believe that all of this will actually cause little or no disruption to HTC’s business in the U.S.”

HTC states this particular patent is a small UI experience (data tapping) and HTC will completely remove it from all of our phones soon.
This recent development is but a minor blow to HTC and may be a bit of a green light to other Android manufacturers. This may be an early round of an extensive litany of patent suits and counter suits among numerous parties. The outcomes of these skirmishes may determine the future of mobility as we know it.

Motorola Droid RAZR

In all the talk and scuttlebutt about the mountain of Samsung phones streaming onto the market the Motorola Droid RAZR seems somewhat lost in the deluge.

Most of the reviews I have read have been glowingly positive even to the point of declaring it is a real marvel of engineering and that just maybe it is good enough to be the best choice for your next phone?

Back in the day the RAZR brand was absolutely THE JOINT!

However, things and times change. Only a few things succeed in recapturing that old magic and live on beyond their time. One of these is the RAZR brand of phones.

Now the property of Verizon the Droid RAZR may definately be a huge leap forward in hardware design and engineering.  But what does it need to have and do to entice you to put one in your pocket?

To start the RAZR is fairly thin, and we all know that thin is in. The RAZR is above all visually impressive and stunning and feels premium-grade sturdy. The new RAZR matches up and competes favorably against the Rezound and Galaxy Nexus.

Rumor: Mac Pro Desktop Might Go!

Apple Insider is among sources floating a rumor that Apple’s Mac Pro Desktop unit may be discontinued, due to declining sales. Word on the street has it that Apple might even discontinue their Pro Line of desktops completely, at least, and heres the catch, “in its current form” (hinting that the line could see change). If fact, there is a middle ground product opening between the Mac Mini and Mac Pro for another desktop tower without the monitor. I’ll call it the Super Mini.

So, what brought this on? Recent sales indicate that almost everyone needing a desktop is instead going after and purchasing iMacs so the desktop has fallen out of favor.

Creative product planning, design and development could redefine and exploit that middle ground. That is exactly how in the tragic aftermath and the loss of Steve Jobs  that Apple’s new management team can redefine and refocus the companies product offerings or maybe even pull some pending innovation off the shelves and into the mix.

We will soon see, won’t we?

Nexus Prime, Droid Bionic: iPhone killers?

The buzz is on!

Two smartphones that are quickly rising to the top of the “iPhone killer” queue are the Samsung Google Nexus Prime and the Motorola Droid Bionic.

The combination of runaway word-of-mouth, heavy rotation TV commercials and rampant rumor has generated serious buzz that Apple will have to (1) recognize (2) be sensitive to and aware of,  and (3) soon challenge if they desire to and intend to maintain their significant and until now unchallenged leadership position in the emerging smartphone market. That here-to-fore unchallenged label is quickly falling away as leading Android competitors sense a gaping opening made possible due to the lack of an iPhone 5 announcement and Apple’s recent loss of Steve Jobs’ leadership.

Follow the links below to learn more about these “cool” devices.

Samsung Google Nexus Prime:

The momentous hype that was the heaped upon the false start of the iPhone 4 is carefully being crafted and co-opted by the soon to be unveiled but now delayed Samsung Google Nexus Prime.

What we have heard so far:

  1. 4.65-inch curved glass screen
  2. 720p resolution
  3. curved glass screen
  4. 1GB of RAM
  5. TI OMAP 4460 dual-core Cortex A9 processor (1.2GHz.)
  6. 32GB built-in storage
  7. 5-megapixel rear-facing camera
  8. 1.3-megaixel front-facing camera
  9. Records 1080p HD video
  10. LTE/HSPA 4G enabled
  11. Near Field Communication (NFC)
  12. Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich mobile OS.

The wait won’t be long, they say the phone will be released in November 2011.

Motorola Droid Bionic:

Soon I will endeavor to take some time to do in-depth analysis of the potential of each and others if and when I have the opportunity, or I will dutifully point you to other superior sources and resources that do that work.

What is certain is that things are soon about to change. Until now, Apple has had the game all to themselves. That situation is soon to be dramitically altered.

With your help and comments, we will do our best attempt to stay on top of the important blow-by-blow changes to come, as they occur.

Tighten your seatbelts we’re in for a rocky ride ahead as we head towards the holidays and new year.

But the ride won’t begin on schedule.

Samsung Galaxy S II on T-Mobile

Apple’s seeming foul-up of not delivering an iPhone 5 has possibly created an opening for other competitive companies to offer up alternative smartphones as potential “iPhone killers”. One interesting alternate that is soon coming to T-Mobile is called the Samsung Galaxy S II and it is due sometime this month. Probably at Samsung’s next planned launch event.

Samsung Galaxy S II Specs:

Form Factor/weight

  • Height: 5.11 inches (129.8 mm)
  • Width: 2.71 inches (68.8 mm)
  • Depth: 0.37 inches (9.4 mm)
  • Weight: 4.77 ounces (135 grams)

Power and battery

  • Rechargeable 1850 mAh lithium-ion battery
  • Charging via USB to computer system or included charger

Processor and OS

  • Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ S3 Processor (1.5 GHz dual-core CPUs)
  • Android™ 2.3.5 Gingerbread

Media and social:

  • DLNA for wirelessly streaming media from phone to TV or computer
  • HDMI output (MHL adaptor required)

Memory

  • Internal phone storage: 16 GB
  • Micro SD Memory card slot (up to 32 GB)
  • RAM: 1 GB

Connectivity

  • 4G: Up to 42 Mbps download speed
  • Wi-Fi: IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n
  • Bluetooth® 3.0

Cameras, photos, video

  • 1080p HD video capture and sharing
  • 8 MP camera with flash
  • 2 MP front-facing camera to easily chat on the go

Display

  • 4.52″ Super AMOLED Plus WVGA touch screen
  • 800-by-480-pixel resolution
In short, all that is quite impressive and merits a close look by anyone on T-Mobile (like me) not necessarily looking for a smartphone called an Apple iPhone.

iPhone: The day after

The shear dissapointment is so palpable you could cut it with a knife. The backset commentary is rife throughout the whole Internet. Every pundit and tech reporter is tripping over their own feet trying to come up with new ways to say something unique or different about everything that went down at Apple HQ yesterday.

To sum up Apple’s conundrum, they did a really poor job of managing everyone’s expectations and this may present an opportunity for competitors.

Apple still has the opportunity to blow the smartphone world away in the near future by actually introducing a new iPhone 5, it is just that they didn’t come through with one yesterday.

Yes, they did do a song and dance around new iPhone 4 versions, features and pricing and talked up a free 3GS (with 2 year contract).

Read my report on the event here.

No iPhone 5! A 4S and “FREE” 3GS?

Let’s Talk iPhone EVENT WRAP UP

Last Tuesday October 4th the morning streets of San Francisco were uncharacteristically empty on the very day of a major Apple event. By mid afternoon techie types were headed back into the city from the Apple iPhone Event.

So what did we learn? No iPhone 5 yet!

New iPhone 4S:

  1. Dual-core A5 chip
  2. 8MP camera and optics
  3. iOS 5 and iCloud

Apple may have made a super blunder or bought themselves a little more fudge time to come up with a truly superior competitive device to debut around the holidays and CES and MacWorld. With everyone and his brother expecting a brand new iPhone 5 to be unveiled today Apple in my opinion under-whelmed everyone with a couple of lesser devices with a few interesting features.

Among the revelations:

  • A Free iPhone 3GS
  • Siri Voice Assistance
  • An updated iPod Nano with new watch faces & fitness watch

Everyone is having their say about what went down at today at Apple’s HQ in Cupertino.

My take is:

The event had little of the glitzy super-sized announcements that we have become used to and that usually brought adoring crowds of Apple sycophants and “fan boys” to their feet.

New CEO, Tim Cook was surely no Steve Jobs, and  the actual presentation seemed to be mostly marketing hype and statistical ”aren’t we just great” chest thumping and bragging.

Apple’s “Let’s Talk iPhone” Event, was expected by most to be Apple’s best opportunity set Apple’s future in the post Steve Jobs era and establish in the minds of millions of consumers the  direction for their high-flying market leading iPhone line, but with no new iPhone 5 announced this day that certainly did not happen however hard we might have wished. I can hear all the many Android smartphone competitors breathing a deep sigh of relief and cranking up their manufacturing and development engines trying to “capture magic in a bottle”.

Regardless, Apple’s iPhone remains easily the leading smartphone in the mobile device market space all around the World, but the iPhone 5 has yet to make an appearance and one can bet their last money that Samsung, Microsoft, HTC and others are getting real busy attempting to strategically and tactivly exploit this possible stumble and Apple’s apparent failure to manage expectations.

Of course there were other issues addressed at the event including iPhone 4S, a soon to be free iPhone 3GS,  iCloud, iOS5, Siri Voice navigation/assistant, Sprint getting iPhones, a few updates to the iPod touch and Nano, but the future of the iPod Classic was not revealed nor its demise declared.

Every mobile technology and news site had eagerly accumulated long detailed lists of leading iPhone 5 rumors and imaginings. Most assumptions were profoundly wrong or way off target.

There were numerous live sources for blog coverage but strangely there was no real time on-site video available save a few select excerpts. There are a few additional newsworthy items revealed that I will detail a little later, but let me stop here and get some rest and decompress, have some lunch and a short nap.

If I sound a little disappointed, that is true! it is just that I really thought the time was right for much more than we got. That actually seems to be a feeling echoed and shared throughout our rather spoiled technology media, but then again, we always expect much more than we actually receive and do not hesitate to complain about whatever it is we get.

Reduction in prices: (Preorder 4Ss – Oct. 7th)

  • 16GB – $199
  • 32GB – $299
  • 64GB – $399
  • iPhone 4 $99 (2 year contract)
  • iPhone 3 – free (2 year contract)

New iPhone 4S specs:

  1. Dual-core A5 CPU
  2. Antenna Reworked
  3. Camera resolution upped to 8-MP – 1080p video
  4. Siri Voice Assistant
  5. More choice in service providers

iPhone 5: 1 Day to go and what do we know?

It can be considered the Super Bowl of Product Watching. The unveiling of Apple’s next Generation iPhone scheduled for tommorrow promises to be a pr\ivotal event for the whole mobile communications industry. It will set the mark to shoot at for all smartphone competitors foreign and domestic and determine the top choice for technology concerned consumers and involved developers.

It will disappoint  some and enthuse others, but in the end the iPhone 5 will provide a baseline for what smartphones are about.

On the other front it will also send strong indications regarding Apple’s course in a post Steve Jobs era.

I am anticipating a surprise or two and hope to learn more about Apple’s plan for the Cloud, iOS 5, possible phone versions and who knows what else.

Hey, I for one can’t wait to get my paws mitts on a Droid Bionic.

iPhone 5: October 4th

The closer we get to the much-rumored release date of the Apple’s next generation iPhone the more rumor mill stories are all ablaze with rumors and imaginings.

is almost certain that October 4th is the agreed upon coming out  date for both the iPhone 5 and new CEO, Tim Cook. We might even begin to expect a dual model release as well. But that is unconfirmed at this point.

However, it is fairly certain that Apple competitors will do everything they can to steal Apple’s thunder or muddy the water with rumors and intentional misdirection in order to slow the leader down.

We have also just learned that isome pre-orders of the new iPhone 5 have started in select cases. Purchasers will receive an advantage coupon ahead of the great expected demand. A further clue to the nearness of the iPhone 5 is that Apple Store employees are set to go through intensive iOS 5 and iPhone 5 and iCloud training.

iPhone 5 in October?

The yet to be released iPhone 5 is already off to a very good start and its not even out there yet. According to the latest unverified rumor it might hitthe market  in Oct 2011. Everyone claims they have an “iPhone killer”. If you are a smartphone competitor how do you really compete with a phone that is not even real yet? Realistically can you do it? Theoretically should you even try?

Well, if you want a place in the ever changing emerging smartphone marketplace you’d better. Just ask Microsoft. But it’s easier said than done.

The bitter lessons learned by HP are cautionary. There are far too many diverse aspects to bring into alignment to do it right. App store, developer base, OS platform, manufacturing, retail channels, marketing, influencers, media and user perceptions, broadband provider partners and thats only a start.add to this traction, pricing, and design and it seems a mountain too high, ocean too wide, belt too tight.

It is enough to have to go up against the iPhone 4 but to have to challenge vaporware is more than we can expect any company to attempt and overcome. HP couldn’t, RIM can’t, Motorola, Microsoft and HTC are trying.

The overly active rumor mill seems to be all of the marketing and promotion that Apple needs to stay in front. It would be difficult for Apple to foul this up. Whoever will drive Apple into the future simply has to deliver a worthy product to a willing marketplace, without screwing up or taking huge steps backwards.

If they craft and are able to deliver on a whole new vision we will look back at this time as transitional. If they drop the ball we will see this as dysfunctional.

The iPhone leaks are plentiful but the one that interests me is that the iPhone 5 will hit in Oct. That give Apple time to shut out all the noise of the competition going into the holidays and CES or MacWorld.

Motorola Droid 3

The Motorola Droid 3

A masterful follow up smartphone to the first two Droid versions. The Motorola Droid 3 began selling in October 2009.

To be straight, It is not an Apple iPhone, nor does it pretend or attempt to be. If anything it really wants to be a complete and useful enterprise device.
