Perhaps the most remarkable yet overlooked aspect of the design community is its friendly, enthusiastic spirit. Every day, literally thousands of talented, hard-working folks out there gain new insight from their work, come up with brilliant ideas and then share their experience with fellow designers.

Nourished by the gratitude of its benefactors and powered by the reach of social networking, this community has produced a wide variety of high-quality articles, resources and tools, available to everybody. Every single contribution supports the entire community, and the community supports these contributors with traffic and word-of-mouth advertising: the networking effect at its best.

Who is behind This Smashing Magazine?

Smashing Media GmbH is behind Smashing Magazine.  They state that they are a young and growing company that publishes articles on various online magazines, but are also known for producing both electronic and printed books on Web design, Web development and desktop publishing.

Productivity is a crucial asset of professional Web designers and developers. We regularly look for new resources, tools and services to make the search of these ever-growing techniques easier. Once we have a reasonable number of useful resources, we prepare them in a handy overview for your convenience. In this post we present some of the useful resources and tools for designers and Web developers.

If you are a web designer, you are dependent on your resources and rely on tools and techniques that increase your productivity and expertise. One of most useful resources I have found is Smashing /Magazine. They have deployed a website that is packed with tools, techniques and links to useful resources.

COOL WEB RESOURCE: .NET Magazine

.net

.net has long been one of my personal favorite magazines and web sites. It managed to make it onto my short list of favorite publications and now onto this site.

So what is .net?

.net is a magazine for web developers and as such it should necessarily be very well designed and absolutely chock full of information and features and indeed .net is exactly that .In both their online and print versions.

According to the .net site: “.net is the world’s best-selling magazine for web designers and developers. Each issue boasts a wealth of expert tips and advice, including over 30 pages of advanced step-by-step tutorials on subjects as diverse as CSS, HTML, JavaScript, web graphics and Flash. You’ll also find in-depth features, not to mention interviews where major industry players impart their wisdom.”

A quick reading will confirm that .net is everything they say it is and we strongly concur that If you’re serious about web design or development, then .net is a magazine that should definately appeal to both your tastes and interests.

  • News

FAV MAG: MacWorld Magazine

Macworld Magazine

Macworld Magazine

I can’t believe that put together a list of my favorite publications and forgot to add MacWorld Magazine to the mix. Something it is easy to overlook what you take for granted or assume will always be there. We have learned all too frequently that is a mistake.

Macworld was the very first tech publication I subscribed to and read almost religiously back the mid 80′s from the birth of the Mac to the current rise of the iPad.

Now, here we into a brand new Millemium in the throes of new and emerging online trends like Social Media and I continue to greatly appreciate and respect all of  Macworld’s hard work and dedication over the many years.

No other technology publication has better supported a single computer platform any better. Windows/P.C.’s have no equivalent (that is important and telling). Apple’s excellent design and innovation over the years hasn’t hurt a bit and has kept Macworld interesting and relevant.

It is amazing how Macworld has “held the fort” through the many evolutions of Apple only to wind up in the middle of documenting the works of what has become and is recognized as the most innovative company on the scene.

There have been and still are competitors both foreign and domestic but none have beaten nor even come close to besting MacWorld at their game. So I send a hearty and grateful “well done” to the past and current Macworld teams responsible for all aspects of MacWorld’s journalism, editing, print, production and online presence. Thank You!

COOL MAGAZINE & WEBSITE: T3

T3 Magazine

T3 Magazine

I have a favorite magazine. It has been my favorite since the late 90′s. I used to plunk down the cash and purchase T3 whenever I could find it at the few serious newsstands that imported and carried it. When I couldn’t find the magazine I would tune into their website. Lately I have lapsed due to so many other distractions. I had to revisit their site and quickly realized what I had been missing. I thought I owed it to you my readers to turn you on to this important resource if you are not already hip to it.

For someone who is selective about what I sign up for I have subscribed to the full range of T3 offerings including the T3 RSS feed and newsletter. I have also registered to joined their membership. This gives me complete access to some of the best technology and gadget content on the web, and allows me to fully join their community of gadget lovers. Allowing me to:

  • Comment on the latest technology news
  • Give my opinion on T3 gadget reviews
  • Enter the latest competitions and hopefully win the latest technology
  • and finally to Receive their free T3 newsletter

The T3 website is chock full of the latest Headlines; News; Reviews; Features; Tech Videos; Lists; Charts; Awards and much more. It is truly good reading!

COOL MAG: Website Magazine

Website Magazine

Website Magazine

Once yearly, I go through the nerve-wrecking process of narrowing down the long list of magazines and periodicals that I subscribe to. One effective method has been to filter them down into groupings according to my main or most pressing interests. One publication that seems to always rise to the top of the stack is Website Magazine. While it is not an amazingly popular or much in demand mag that does not diminish the quality or content. The dedication and hard work of the staff and their efforts to inform and provide high-quality information to web designers and site builders from the newbie stages to expert and professional is laudible and much appreciated.

Website Magazine covers topics of interest to those that make a living in the business of web development. It is packed with tips, news and coverage of topics like SEO, online marketing and advertising, strategies, social media, web design, and software solutions. The digital edition has simplified my weeding and provided me with a useful online diversion. Chheck Website Magazine out for yourself!

Stuff Magazine & TV

StuffTV

StuffTV

Looking for more quality content? Why, Of course you are!

You can’t do much better that to visit and bookmark StuffTV. Stuff offers a straightforward selection of coverage and is a great source of information on COOL gear, gadget, reviews, awards, videos and technology news.

Content on Stuff site is broken down into easily navigational Channels and Types. There is also a healthy smattering of delectable rumors and gossip onboard.

5/6/11 Addendum:

I usually don’t like many redesigns having become accustomed to previous renditions.

In the case of Stuff Magazine. I like the fact that STUFF redeveloped and simplified their website and made it much easier to find exactly what we the readers are looking for. They didn’t take the “kitchen sink approach nor did they go totally bare bones. There is just enough there to hold my interest and keep me coming back. Isn’t that the desire and objective of any effective web design team?

I happen to be a fan of minimalist design. That does not mean that things should be so sparse that there is nothing there. Finding the right balance is the mark that most miss.

This could have been the easy trap that STUFF could have fallen into. With the amount of content and features they have to present the trick was to do this without making the UI so complex they would fatigue or frustrate the reader.

That does not say that they didn’t throw in some glitz, Turn on their Inspir-O-Tron, and let us know what you think.

C|Net TV

cnet

cnet

c|net has been a favorite media site of mine for years. I even enjoyed daily their San Francisco AM broadcast radio station. My other favorite was ZDnet. Fast forward a few years. In some way I still don’t understand they are both joined or at least friendly and after a world of new trends good old c|net is hanging in there tough. Their roster of spirited hosts and bring levity and expertise to what could otherwise be dull and drab tech banter. c|net has above all been consistent in professionally covering the width and bredth of new technology in unique ways that no one else has.

If you are new to the web or plain tired of just about everything else out there, do yourself a turn, bop over to c|net and give it a try. Also, whenever you are interested or motivated to purchase a new product you should consider researching the product and compare it by looking through c|net reviews and analysis.

Fast Company

Fast Company

Fast Company

Fast Company was once one of my all-time favorite magazines. That was before the big dot.com bust of 2000. Ocassionally I still pick up a copy at my local newsstand when it is available. I am thrilled that Fast has survived the ups and downs of the economy and frequent changes in technology. I should not be surprized considering the recent rise and popularity of new social media ventures. Somehow things have  played right into the hands of Fast Company and it this is the exact  time they were made for.

Wired Magazine

For a long time one of the most entertaining and informative media properties has been and continues to be Wired Magazine. To say that Wired was there at the beginning would be an understatement. Wired in fact has lead the way onto the online world while continuing to serve up a very compelling high quality print magazine. Wired is one of the few that has managed to succeed where many others have failed and fallen. Wired has also been the launching pad for a great many trends, innovations, new businesses and journalistic careers.

I have come to value and appreciate Wired’s online growth and development over the past couple of years to so much that Wired has become my Magazine of choice and a site I visit to research digital products whenever I have a little time to spare. I sincerely hope that we will have Wired around online and in print for many years to come.

Into Tomorrow with Dave Graveline

Into Tomorrow is a combo online podcast and over-the-air radio broadcast that is well worth listening to. For a long time Into Tomorrow has been one of my favorite listens and host Dave Graveline is a very cool no-nonsense professional host. Guests address each weeks technology and consumer news and issues with call-in opportunities for listeners to join in and contribute. Dave is a competent seasoned without an out-of-proportion ego and so is very easy to listen to. The guests and co-hosts also seem to know what they are talking about and consistently offer up insightful commentary on a wide range of topics. Their “This week in Tech History” segment is informative and humorous.

MacLife Magazine

Survival for somewhat smaller niche market magazines is tenuous and steadily losing retail rack space.  San Francisco-based MacLife has thankfully managed to hang in there. First by merging with MacHome Magazine, and then by getting acquired by the Future Publishing Company. The overall print quality has benefited by the later move and the content by the first. I still miss MacHome’s bonus CD’s that were shrink-wrapped with each month’s issue and accompanied by online free resources, product trials and shareware. The current publication stands tall among Mac Mags. It also looks like it is morphing onto the web under the names DigitalLife and MacLife and as an iPad/iPhone app as MacLife.

Mac Directory

If you are a seasoned long-time Mac user, a recent convert or a newbie iPhone, iPad adoptee, the one publication resource you need to be aware of and maybe consider subscribing to is “Mac Directory”. It may be somewhat hard to find in less than full and complete newsstands or at MacWorld Expos but you can look it up online and put in your subscription.  A more complete and useful publication for Apple enthusiasts you will not find. It contains articles, product listings, contact information, product advertisements and the ocassional product review. Mac Directory has been around quite a while and has artfully managed to survive and thrive  where countless others have miserably failed. It is affordable, subscriptions are available and the print quality is excellent.

At the moment (3/14/11) I am uncertain why their site is down but hopefully that is a only temporary condition. Check back soon.
