Gigapixel Cameras? Yeah! But not soon

Several of my friends who are also professional photographers went nuts when they heard of a 41 #Megapixel camera. They tossed their regular film gear and turned into confirmed digital gearheads. When I tell them that DARPA is aiming at 10-50 gigapixel cameras capable of taking photos that are at a higher resolution than the human eye can see the tops of their heads will surely come off.

Please note that that is not what consumer cameras will be able to support until a long time in the far distant future. DARPA has tested a 1.4 and .96 gigapixel camera and they plan to continue researching the technology and hope to reach between 10-50 gigapixels. 1 gigapixel is 1,000 megapixels, or 1 billion pixels. The camera uses between 100 and 150 micro cameras to create a wide panoramic image with a very high resolution.
