CAUTION: Fake apps on Android Market

If you casually obtain apps from Android Market it would be both wise and prudent to first do your homework to see if they are exactly what they claim to be.

Recently there have been a rash of fake apps on Android Market that at quick glance seem to be correct but are actually masquerading as legitimate popular products and as popular games.
Known Fakes:
  • Siri for Android
  • Pinterest

This may speak to the diligence that needs to be exercised before allowing apps to be peddled to the public. The potential for abuse leading to disaster is enormous and should be corralled before it gets out of hand. Google has indeed been removing Premium SMS fraudulent apps masquerading as legitimate products from its the official Android Market,

Tips on how to detect apps that might not be legitimate and – what’s worse – .
  1. Know who the developers are, Check out the developers profile
  2. Pause if you are the least bit suspicious.
  3. Download apps with caution

2012: So close we can almost smell it

Here we are just daysfrom popping the cork on 2012 and every technology pundit and their blogging monions are literally tripping over themselves attempting to predict and forecast whats in store in the world of technology for the coming year. Most of these immaginings involve the selfish hopes and desires of those that vainly presume that they know exactly what we, the consumers want and need. Usually a new disrupyive technology innovation explodes on the scene at least a month or two in that unexpectantly completely alters the anticipated direction of technology for the near future.

Companies like Apple and Google introduce their latest “game changer” and watch everybody else attempt to play catch up or just keep up.

Hopefully soon we will see the launches of the iPad 3, iPhone 5 and a whole slew of Android devices. These are expected. The mystery is the unexpected. Is there something ready to spring out of a skunkworks that will really shake things up and cause us to wonder why the heck we didn’t see it coming. We will adjust our careers to incorporate it into our expertise profile. Marketers will find new ways to make money offering its secrets and shortcuts.

Attacking iPad on Price, Performance. etc.

There are companies hat are siding with users that think that the iPad is too expensive. They are taking the tack of offering lower priced tablets in hopes that this strategy can succeed n capturing a share of the enormous market opportunity.

Not all are choosing to compete simply on lower prices. Other companies are offering a slew of alternatives including: performance enhancements, free apps and external options the iPad is lacking. With the next generation iPad 3 months away they see this as an open window in time.
Tablet Options:
  1. Kindle Fire $199
  2. Archos 28 $91
  3. Archos 43 $178
  4. Imports from China $$$

Get ready for the CES 2012 Onslaught!

With CES only a few short days away I anticipate that we will see mobility market corporate positioning like never before.

It will come in a slew of new product launches, patent suit news,  good deal announcements, OS/Device upgrades, and yes countless lies and rumors all mostly intended to capture our interest and purchase decisions.

Some will be smoke and mirror announcements that will never see the light of day. Other announcements may be intended to simply slow up or confuse the competition.

As diligent consumers we all need to do our homework and closely follow developments.

2011-2012: Welcome to Gadgetized Culture

I really knew things had drastically changed when almost everyone at my large family Xmas gathering at some point pulled out their latest generation advanced smartphones.

Even family elders were geared up including that shy four-year old boy wouldn’t be torn away from the glitzy little gaming gadget that occupied his attention.

This in a family that only a few years prior was technology adverse and made fun of me when I dared to pull out my HTC G1. This time there were slick Androids and iPhones all around. My phone was the oldest there.

When the gifts were finally opened you can guess what the leading gift was. When the photo ops spang up everyone like gunslingers quickly drew out their phones and turned into instant paparazi.

When cultural shifts infect my family specifically I can imagine how profound this is happening across society in general.

Next year I wouldn’t be very surprized if everyone there comes packing iPads and Tablets.

Go Daddy: Reconsiders SOPA stance

Technology Companies may need to begin to seriously consider any andall the political and legal stances they take or whose side they line up on in the future.

It may just be a coincidence–or it could be the result of the company’s p.r. debacle over its support for SOPA.

Cautionary Tale

Domain registrar Go Daddy seemingly may have “screwed the pooch” recently by supporting the very controversial SOPA, the Stop Online Piracy Act. The result of Go Daddy’s stance is that over 21,000 domains have transferred away from Go Daddy.

This type of strong and costly consumer reaction may go a long way to get the attention of other Internet industry players serving online consumers.

 Update:

Now Go Daddy has actually reversed course and has dropped support . “Go Daddy will support it when and if the Internet community supports it,” Go Daddy CEO, Warren Adelman said in a statement.

12/30/11 Update

Sometimes companies can stop and reconsider their stances. In this case Go Daddy has responded to threatsof a boycott by reversing direction on their support of for the controversial legislation called SOPA.

As a result the wellspring of incoming domains turned back on with twice as many transfering in as those leaving. This seems to have takien much of  the steam out of the boycott against Go Daddy. Theinitial stance still leaves a bad taste in the mouth of highly charged users that Go Daddy even considered supporting SOPA in the first place, and where Go Daddy is actually coming from politically and socially.

In the meantime Go Daddy has dipped into their deep bucket of healthy revenue to initiate an aggressive advertising campaign to help restore their damaged reputation and repair the bruised relationship with many disappointed customers.

Google’s 1 Billion Dollar Search Deal

1 Billion $

1 Billion $

Google Will Pay Mozilla Almost $300M Per Year in a big deal Search Deal, beating out Microsoft and Yahoo in the bidding.

Google and Mozilla have inked a renewal of their search royalty deal for another three years. This places the Google search field directly onto the main screen of Mozilla’s Firefox

Google will pay about $300 million per year to be the default choice in Mozilla’s Firefox browser, a huge jump from its previous arrangement, this is to stave off competing interest from Yahoo and Microsoft’s Bing. The previous partnership between Google and Mozilla had expired in November, and there has been mounting tension between the two over Google’s Chrome Browser which recently for the first time beat Firefox in the race for global usage. The action over search market share is only getting more intense.

Sources said this amount is the minimum revenue guarantee for delivering search queries garnered from consumers using Firefox.

Google’s main rival in the bid was Microsoft’s Bing  which was aggressively trying to wiggle their way into the game by buying the main search spot on the Firefox browser. It is no secret that Microsoft has been spending a tons of money in efforts to grow Bing’s market share in the search market. This latest hurdle will slow them up but not stop them. Microsoft owns the still-popular Internet Explorer browser, but Google’s Chrome has proven to be a great browser making major strides over both IE and Mozilla’s Firefox.

Yahoo, a once wildly popular search service now somewhat in decline is now powered by Microsoft and was actually in the mix in the bidding for the prime real estate on Firefox but decided that the economies were too high.

Mozilla still has partnerships with other search providers, including Bing, Yahoo, Yandex, Amazon and eBay.

I’m still waiting to see who will step up to the plate and buy Yahoo. I once thought cash-rich Microsoft was going to be the one, then Comcast or AT&T,  or will the worst case scenario play out? The big players might just let it ride off into the sunset? YAHOO…

Pure Genius: Hallmark Storybooks

Today I saw one of the better integrations of technology into our lives.

A commercial on TV showed two darling little girls listening to Grandma tell them a bedtime story recorded on their Storybook.

Afterwards they said in the sweetest little voices “Goodnight Grandma”.
I only wish I had recorded my parents in their voices before they passed.
Hallmark should be proud to have thought this up.
Pure genius!

Apple’s Newsstand: A Huge Success for Publishers

Newsstand, a hot new feature of iOS 5, is scoring big points where traditional media publishers failed to deliver.
The secret sauce seems to be new digital subscriptions brought on by new iPhone, iPad and iPod touch owners seeking content.
Newsstand is a folder on the iOS home screen, and funnels all your digital magazine and newspaper app subscriptions to a single location.
“Apple Newsstand is rapidly changing the way many people buy and read magazines, similar to how we bought and listened to music through iTunes.
Top analysts see this as revolutionary. It is a platform that makes it easy and profitable for publishers to move into the digital age without committing their future to experimenting with changing the publishing model on their own. Publishers are reporting subscription surges for their newspaper and magazine apps. as much as 1,150 % growth increase and sales of millions of digital magazines.
Pros:
Easy access to these apps
Automatically updates in the background when new issues are released, and
The killer feature: includes a built-in store for purchasing subscriptions.
Purchased titles are displayed individually on Newsstand’s virtual bookshelf.
Newsstand provides greater discoverability of publications.
Newsstand increases the visibility of subscription magazines and newspaper apps
However, not everyone is thrilled with the addition of Newsstand to Apple’s iOS ecosystem. For some iOS users Newsstand’s empty bookshelf is an annoying irritant.  Newsstand is a folder, rather than an app so users can’t easily remove it from their home screen, but some have geeks figured out a workaround that doesn’t require jail breaking. These folks, however are in the minority. Many less-critical users are filling up their virtual  bookshelves with digital subscriptions, giving a healty boost to magazine and newspaper app makers, and the flagging publishing industry.
Is Apple giving a new birth to the future of publishing for the Digital Age?

Digi Cam Companies…Freaking Out

Digital camera manufacturers laughed their way to the bank when they were heartily demolishing and devastating the traditional film camera marketplace.

Now digital cameras themselves are on deadpool death watch list mostly thanks to Smartphones eqipped with nice camera capabilities.

What made me think about this was when I opened up my mailbox and there were over 10 circulars from camera companies like Nikon, Canon hyping deep Xmas deals on a wide range of digital cameras.

I’d swear I caught whiff of panic as if this would be their last hurrah. You know what? it just might be!

I can’t remember the last time I saw someone whip out their fancy little digital camera. I live in picturesque camera-friendly San Francisco and In that same time I have seen a great many smartphone photogs busily snapping pics.

It wasn’t so very long ago when I walked into a local Ritz camera and showed the sales crew my then hot new Digital camera and wise-ass that I am warned them that if they didn’t get in the digital thing they would lose.

Lucky for them, they did. Now sadly I can’t find good film nor accessories for my vintage film cameras. Tripodssure but try to buy a roll of Kodak Kodachrome slide film, no F’ing way!

So here is my first prediction for 2012. I see an end to the dominance of the SLR camera form factor and the continued rise of smartphone camera quality and resolution.

Apple granted patent on using apps during calls.

U.S. Patent Office

U.S. Patent Office

Apple was just granted a game changing patent for using apps while also on a call. This patent covers the process of switching between a call and an app and then back again on the popular iPhone.

It won’t be impossible for other manufacturers to develop other methods for switching between a call and apps that don’t violate this patent, but the existence of the patent will make it much harder for their solutions to be as smooth and elegant. It is believed by mobility industry watchers that this is a big deal that is certain to impact andslow the development of Apple’s competition in the smartphone market space.

At first glance this patent seems specific, while in fact it is actually pretty broad. Competitors will surely get busy working up alternative methods and creative workarounds but this particular patent is but another hurdle that may impede and stimey many of the leading iPhone challengers.

It seems that the new tactical business strategy is to build a whole wall of patents around hot new products to forstall and trip up competitive attacks.

iPhone 5 Rumor Roundup:

Its that time of the year that the Android World will debut a slew of new phones and related services in an attempt to unseat Apple’s hold on the market.

Pundits will hype stats that state that Android has already won the battle. Others will crow about the features of phones that probably won’t make it to the marketplace  till December 2012, if ever.
The following is really just a short list that we absolutely are certain will expand in the next few months in light of new competitive products arriving on the scene real soon (at CES 2012).

iPhone 5 Rumor list:
  1. It will have a docking unit
  2. A bigger screen with twice the resolution of the iPhone 4
  3. It will come in at a lower price than previous iPhones
  4. 4″ screen despite Jobs’ admonition
  5. Casing will have flat edges rather than teardrop tapering
  6. Aluminium casing similar to iPod Touch
  7. Summer 2012 launch
  8. A thicker form factor
  9. Higher resolution HD screen
  10. LTE compatibility
  11. Increased screen size from 3.5” to 4”
  12. A docking accessory may be in the works
  13. Dynamic voice command enhancements to Siri
  14. Significant improvements and features to iOS 5 operating system
  15. Partnerships with Facebook and others
  16. Advanced integrated iCloud services
  17. iPhone Pricing reduced to compete with lower priced competitors

Warning:

None, or at least very few of these rumors have been confirmed and they are simply rumors and as such should be accepted with a huge grain of salt.

We just don’t know!

Fringe Companies in 2012

Big companies like Apple, Microsoft, Motorola, Samsung and Google have a good idea where their future rests, but what about the thousands upon thousands of smaller marginal companies that operate just outside hot, glitzy, and trendy niches and market segments? These are the bedrock suppliers that make many of the essential external and add-on accessory products that enhance or perfect the capabilities of the dearly acquired computers and mobile devices we own, love and use.

How are these players making it these days? If they are smart and agile they should have their ears to the ground and stay busy studying the latest innovative technologies for openings and sizable gaps representing openings and opportunities to keep their development labs working on products that address those gaps and lead to profitability and sustainability.

Examples:

These are only a few of the worthy cable, hard disc, monitor, bag and case makers now joined in competition for hard fought consumer dollars by a great many newly hot app builders.

It would be fortunate if these two segments came together to innovate and develop products missing from our current range of selections. After all the direction og our times is making everything intelligent by embedding technology into things that do useful stuff.

ARCHOS ARNOVA INTERNETRADIO + TV

As a 20-year veteran Radio Broadcaster I am and remain quite intrigued by Archos Arnova multimedia radio and to put it simply, really want one!

Understand right off, the Archos Arnova is no ordinary radio (whatever that means), Archos’ Arnova is “Super Radio”. It packs a 3.5-inch touchscreen (320×240) display in its center and provides users with the ability to connect to over 12,000 streaming radio stations and more than 1,500 “web TV” channels. That ain’t shabby!

The Archos Arnova Radio supports 2GB of internal storage easily expandable by SD cards and Arnova supports superb playback from a wide range of audio file types including: MP3, WAV, AAC, FLAC, AVI, MP4 and FLV.

Regarding connectivity the Archos Arnova Radio has Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g and even contains a built in alarm clock.

As yet we have no firm pricing information nor notice of worldwide availability but we are working on digging that up. Amazon.co.UK has it listed but their site states it is “Currently unavailable”. Damn, Damn, Damn!

Amazon.com (USA) has it listed but it is a different more tablet styled model with TV features and even then is listed as Temporarily out of stock”. In the Holiday shopping season, what’s up with that?

Apple hands HTC a minor setback

Cupertino scored victory over Taiwan’s HTC by winning a patent victory. Apple claims HTC’s phones illegally use patented features found in the iPhone. Depending on how this plays out in court HTC may face an import ban at could have been the worst possible time.

In what is seen as a limited legal victory for Apple, the U.S. International Trade Commission ruled that HTC violated only one of Apple’s, Calif.-based company’s patents. But that may enough to slow up the train but not derail it.

HTC responded quickly by agreeing to remove the feature in despite from all upcoming HTC phones soon. This means that ITC’s ruling will have very little practical effect.

ITC’s imposed import ban on only some of HTC’s products won’t take effect until April 19, 2012, giving HTC, Google, and partners a window of time to remove certain features or figure out technical work-arounds that don’t infringe on the patent.

Apple filed a complaint alleging that HTC violated 10 of its patents. In a preliminary ruling in June, an ITC administrative law judge found only two violations, and this latest ruling narrows the violation to only one of the original 10 patents.

Industry watchers believe that all of this will actually cause little or no disruption to HTC’s business in the U.S.”

HTC states this particular patent is a small UI experience (data tapping) and HTC will completely remove it from all of our phones soon.
This recent development is but a minor blow to HTC and may be a bit of a green light to other Android manufacturers. This may be an early round of an extensive litany of patent suits and counter suits among numerous parties. The outcomes of these skirmishes may determine the future of mobility as we know it.

Holiday Price Breaks: Last Call!

Here we are 5 short days until Xmas and Techno Santa Geek is busy offering deals, bargains and sales that are hard to resist.

For many, migraines and headaches are on the menu for 2012, for others great deals and good times are ahead. But, before you rush off in a buying frenzy and give way to these “Last Minute Holiday Price Breaks”, take a quick moment to think about what you will need to step into a new year end to address the many potential opportunities that may lay ahead.

RIM’s PlayBook is the one deal that pops up most frequently. How many dead end tech do you need? I have a whole box that wouldn’t sell on eBay that I could offer you.

Factors to consider:

  1. Longevity is an important factor in what you should be looking at.
  2. Consider who you buy from. Will they be around this time next year?
  3. Pricing is important but know that prices fall.
  4. Quality is vital. Is your chosen product reliable?
  5. Do your homework and know exactly what you are buying.
  6. Beware of unecessary or expensive extended warranties

Once you have a good handle on exactly what you need and how much you should pay. Go for it! Enjoy.

Updates can (and will) F* you up!

You can hope upgrades will make things run better, however chances are much freater that they will throw crap into your work process and negatively impact productivity to that point.
There is no update police nor standard policies, guidelines or rules that force developers to make upgrades work.
The average user’s supposition is developers upgrade to fix things and not to break things, but we all know that in the real world that is pure bullshit.
Wishful thinking does not get the work done.
By upgrades we are referring to newer versions of applications, apps, operating systems, firmware, hardware, extensions, plug-ins and devices. Nowhere in this does anyone make the promise of  ”better”. Just newer or actually later.
To some upgrading is a strategy to lock in users or get them to purchase upgrades. To others forcing required upgrades is a form of copy protection.
Addendum:
Firefox 9 let me see the great promise and incredible potential of automatic pushed updates. They could be a very useful feature in a perfect world. But it isn’t and some developers are less than diligent therefore we cannot expose ourselves, our information  and our systems to their laxness.
I don’t want to leave the impression that bad upgrades are malicious. Often they are simply poor programming and design. When developers choose to a different tack they do not always consider their users. They change interfaces, fuctions and features as they need to. The result is often bound to cause problems for some dedicated dependent users.
One day it works like this. Then the very next day it seems that nothing works right or at least like it has in the past.

The Era of Voice is Here!

Voice Command

Voice Command

Over the last couple of decades Dragon stuck to the vision of voiceinput and eventually delivered on the promise of voice command and entry on the desktop.
Then In 2011 Apple’s Siri on the iPhone 4S lead the charge in the mobile world and now every manufacturer is likely busy preparing and positioning to keep up with the market leader. Certainly there were a couple of also ran voiceproducts on the Android platform but now voice has gotten serious. More importantly, Users are now aware that there is a better way than thumbing tiny virtual keyboards and that by speaking they can do their work all they need to do is select a smartphone and OS that supports voice command and entry.
If I was young computer science and communications student these are the niches I would seriously explore and consider diving into.
We are still in the early days but I predict that some day very soon we will see a major development either in hardware (A Voice chip) or software that capitalizes on, perfects and delivers a superior level of voice capability for mobility that is undeniably better than what we have now.
Voice Capability:
  1. Command
  2. Text entry
  3. Memo
  4. Messaging
  5. Control
  6. Access
  7. UI
  8. Response tones (the device understands).
Audio cues and controls are being built into new cars and many other complicated devices leading to a voice controlled embedded world of no more clocks blinking 12:00:00 forever.
Your devives are listening and are ready to activate to your commands.
Sound familiar? That is the future we knew was coming but now we know it is near if not already here.

Technological Blind Spots: Yours, Mine & Ours

Blind Spots

Blind Spots

BLIND SPOTS?

We all have them. Like hard to see areas around our vans and cars that we cannot see to navigate safely.

They may be complex things we do not know nor have any interest in learning or knowing, or profound things that expose our weak spots and learning gaps.

Usually most of us cannot admit these to others prefering to hide behind our well developed masks of confidence and supreme capability.
The World of the consultant:
For consultants “I don’t know” is not an option. What we do not know we can Wiki and Google up and in a few minutes and pretend to be an expert spewing the requisite lingo. We might even take in a few blogs and develop a borrowed perspective or opinion.
The Internet has made all this possible. Before it you had to have taken courses in the subject or had access to a stock of books and the time to dig.
If you can think of some others plese send them to me so I can include in this post or in my upcoming book.
