DELL: Here to Stay?

I was thinking about what topics I should investigate for a new post and the name Dell came to mind.

I hadn’t heard much about or from the company in recent months and began to wonder how Dell is reacting to recent changes in the marketplace. Where is their  tablet device, if they have one? How are they using Social Media, if they are? What new products are on their current roster? What’s the immediate and long term future of Dell look like?

A quick search revealed that Dell has 5″ 7″ and 10″ Android tablets, a Mini 3 Android smartphone, a Venue Windows 7 phone, they have invested $1Billion in cloud development, They are still pursuing HP in the server business. They have a collaboration with VMWare, and according to one article they have reinvented themselves as a full-service IT systems maker. In the personal computer market Dell has finally leaped ahead of long-time rival Acer.

Dell March 17 introduced a refreshed line of Vostro 3000 notebooks and Sandy Bridge All-in-one computers available in four sizes intended for small business users.

Bottom line it looks like Dell is around to stay, especially if they find a cool niche they can easily take over and dominate. That, of course, is easier to say than to do. Apple has been masterful in this regard, but Dell and others are in danger of growing stale.
