Apple 2011: Quest for supremacy

For a company that started the race from the front, it is interesting that Apple must rally to maintain a lead or even stay in the race. The reason for this is that early on, just after getting off to a running good start the company paused and lifted their skirt (just out of the blocks) and managed to once again enable and empower big competition by inviting “the big bad wolf” (this time Google) into the hen-house for chicken dinner. The first hungry wolf to eat Apple’s tasty hot meal was Microsoft in their early “DOS is dead” days when Microsoft mugged Apple and grabbed up Mac’s user interface. One would have hoped years later and thought that Apple would have and should have learned it’s lesson well. Fast forward a few decades, Apple has managed to survive and even thrive only to once again repeat what I think was the biggest businesses blunder ever. Future developments of the iPhone, iPad and MacBook products will finally determine just how this will all play out and shake out. This is an on-going story without a clear ending, but my money, as always, is on Apple if only for their clear style and design sense and process, if not their strategic partnership decisions.

Moto Xoom

Until The Xoom tablet started shipping in the last week of February, it would have been fairly easy to count the once high-flying Motorola down and out for the count, but as fortune has a way of turning rapidly on the edge of masterful innovation, Motorola seems to have landed “on its feet” and dug deep to get up off the mat and rally, thanks to their new Xoom tablet. The Xoom runs Android Honeycomb, houses a Qualcomm MDM6600 chip capable of 14.4Mbps HSPA+ speeds, Toshiba NAND flash memory, and sports NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 dual-core SOC.

Let it be known: Moto is definitely back in the game, strong.

Xoom Parts listing:
• Toshiba THGBM2G8D8FBAIB — 32 GB of NAND Flash memory
• CPCAP 2.2TC22 — ST-Ericsson IC
• Qualcomm PM8028 — Power Management IC
• AGD8 — ST Microelectronics L3G4200D – 3-AXIS MEMS Gyroscope
• Kionix KXTF9 – MEMS Motion Sensing Accelerometer
• NVidia Tegra 2 — Dual-core processor
• Elpida B4016B1MA — DDR DRAM memory — 1 GB total
• Broadcom BCM4239 — Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/802.11n chipset
• Aki Semiconductor AKM8975 — Electronic Compass
• Toshiba Y9A0A111308LA — Memory
• Qualcomm MDM6600 – Multi-mode for GSM/GPRS/EDGE, CDMA, HSDPA and HSPA+, and EV-DO

PRO: Xoom is the first tablet to ship with a NVidia Tegra 2 dual-core processor running Android 3.0 (Honeycomb).
CON: it doesn’t have as many apps as the iPad; Verizon’s pricing is steep,.
Bottom Line: The Xoom is cool, attractive and fast

New 13″, 15″, & 17″ MacBook Pros

Three New MacBook Pros

GOOD NEWS!!!: The celebration begins today for those of us that have managed to hold off jumping on the iPad, MacBook AIR bandwagon and patiently awaiting the announcement of a new MacBook Pro, Well, Good times are finally here!

According to Apple blurbs/specs the new MacBook Pro brings state-of-the-art processors, all-new graphics, and breakthrough high-speed I/O.

State-of-the-art Intel processors.
The 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pro now feature quad-core Intel Core i7 processors. And the 13-inch models jump to dual-core Intel Core i5 and i7 processors. All models are up to 2x faster.*
Up to 2x faster processors and 3x faster graphics.

Next-generation quad-core and dual-core Intel processors.
The 13-inch MacBook Pro now features a 2.3GHz Intel Core i5 processor or the fastest dual-core processor available — the 2.7GHz Intel Core i7. With Turbo Boost speeds up to 3.4GHz, these processors allow the 13-inch MacBook Pro to perform up to twice as fast as the previous generation.1

The new 15- and 17-inch models bring quad-core power. The available 2.3GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor — with Turbo Boost speeds up to 3.4GHz and up to 8MB of shared L3 cache — this allows these MacBook Pro models to run applications up to twice as fast as their top-of-the-line predecessors.2

Thunderbolt. The next generation of I/O.
Introducing Thunderbolt.
The fastest, most versatile I/O ever in a notebook. New Thunderbolt technology lets you connect high-performance peripherals and high-resolution displays to a single port—with data transfer rates up to 10 Gbps.

Imagine accessing multiple streams of uncompressed HD video — from your notebook — at speeds that let you edit an HD feature film in real time. That’s how Thunderbolt technology will connect the next generation of high-performance peripherals to the next generation of computers — starting with MacBook Pro. Ultrafast and ultraflexible, the Thunderbolt pipeline is more than 12 times faster than FireWire 800 and up to 20 times faster than USB 2.0, and it offers unprecedented expansion capabilities. It changes what you can do on a notebook.
The Thunderbolt port will give you plug-and-play performance with a whole new world of Thunderbolt peripherals, as well as with the Apple LED Cinema Display and other Mini DisplayPort peripherals. You can daisy-chain as many as six devices, including your display. And with support for video and eight-channel audio, it’s easy to connect HDMI-compatible devices — like your TV and home stereo — using the HDMI adapter you already have. Current VGA, DVI, and DisplayPort adapters are also supported.

Game-changing graphics.
AMD Radeon graphics on the 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pro are up to 3x faster than those in previous models,** so you can take everything from games to CAD to HD video projects anywhere.

Prospective buyer’s can trip over to Apple.con to configure a MacBook Pro online or venture out to pick one up TODAY at your nearest Apple Retail Store.

Too Many Tablets!

First there were none, then there were some, and now there are too damn many. What happened to innovation? This is just digital leapfrog and the worst part is that none seem to offer much more than the original iPad. In the pricing department they are just as expensive and don’t have near the resale, or quick-sale value. What is more amazing is that the flood of tablets has just gotten underway. There certainly will be a thinning when the market has spoken but until then keep your head above water and be on the lookout for a standout device.

Apple iPad (64GB) Tablet

iPad 2 Coming March 11
In an act of serious convergence, Apple has joined the Netbook, e-reader, gaming device, photo frame, and iPod into an elegant supergadget. Sporting features such as Bluetooth, 802.11n Wi-Fi, movie rentals, Long battery life, optional 3G wireless, and the leading App Store Apple hit one way out of the park. The iPad’s size is an advantage. However. The lack of front or rear cameras,  and video and hard drive ports is a bummer.

For the moment The Apple iPad is the best affordable and functional tablet worth looking at, but don’t expect it to completely replace your laptop or even your Smartphone, but it’s early yet and here comes the flood of competitors, and then will come the iPad 2. Good-times-a-Roni.

About ‹ The Coolness Factor — WordPress

2011: Welcome to “App World”

I anticipate and predict that from 2011 to 2012  ”Apps” will completely change the traditional computer hardware/software ecosystem and sebsequently eliminate the need for expensive single-purpose applications and multi-application Office suites. Tiny bit-sized Apps will eventually clutter up our mobile communications devices, extend the usefulness of our laptop and desktop computers, enhance our websites and serve us in a million and one ways that we are only just now beginning to understand or even appreciate.

It is all together possible that we may actually be bearing witness the eventual demise of the traditional “retail computer store” completing what has been a four decade decline.

Looking Back: Technology 2010

All-in-all it was a really poor year for new technology. Other than Apple’s iPad there was nothing much to speak about. We got 3G, 4G and even 5G, but who the hell cares if the devices we use are slow and retarted.

In 2010 we were almost forcibly pushed to consider “the cloud” to supply our applications with the real winner of the change “Apps”. App Stores sprang up to sell small low-cost applications that turn our phones into mini-computers and productivity tools.

MacWorld 2011

MacWorld, Year Two without Apple was a tribute to the hard work of IDG to keep a good thing going. It was bigger and better than 2010 but the feeling was that something was missing. This was the perfect chance for developers and smaller players to introduce their products and services to thousands of Mac adherents looking to discover the “killer app” or the ultimate peripheral device or case.
